I regularly challenge my Toastmasters members to face down their fears, and I do my best to model that behavior as well. At least that’s what I like to think.
Early in life, I struggled a lot with procrastination. This situation didn’t begin to improve until I encountered some insight one day in an article I read. Procrastination, it explained, is nothing but an unacknowledged fear.
When you dig below the reluctance to do something, you’ll find a fear lurking. It may be a rational fear, but likely it’s not. If you can dispel the fear, the reluctance to act goes with it. Then it’s much easier to face up to whatever you were avoiding.
Stage fright can be managed. So can procrastination. But both require commitment, and a willingness to face the fear.
