The single sweetest thing about unemployment is never being awakened by an alarm clock.
The next best thing, though, is the morning silence that follows. I don’t have to turn on the local news to check the weather and traffic. I don’t have to watch the clock, rush to the shower, feed the cat or fly out the door.
Okay, I still have to feed the cat, but I’m working on resetting her inner clock as well. She’s just finding it a little more difficult than I do, being more a creature of habit.
Soon, soon, I’ll be adding a dog to the family dynamic. That will require a little more structure of us all. Dogs, bless them, know nothing but routine. And the routine the little mutt will impose—walks, feedings, yard cleanings—will be welcome in a way. So for right now I’m enjoying the liberty a dog will bring to an end, and the cat on the lap is enough.
Freedom!
