The Chosen

One of the most dangerous thoughts in the world is that one type of person is inherently better than another.

We see that thought given legitimacy in culture, in religion, in politics, in schools, in our own neighborhoods.

The lines of distinction vary: white is better than black, male is better than female, blonde is better than brunette, Christian is better than Buddhist, Republican is better than Democrat, American is better than Japanese. We constantly draw lines of exclusion which always include us. Whatever our prejudice, we are always on the side God loves best. How self-serving. How human.

When any one group of people considers itself somehow more entitled, every other group is negated, dismissed, demonized. This is how we justify discrimination, biased law enforcement, cliques, gated communities and concentration camps.

If humankind is to endure, we must find a way to relate to one another without the compelling need to subjugate. God can’t love us all best.
